SA: Inmates started Baxter blaze, says ACM
The managers of South Australia's Baxter immigration detention centre say inmates usedmattresses and newspapers to light three fires which gutted a complex of four rooms.
Australasian Correctional Management says the fires caused an estimated $60,000 damage.
A spokesman for ACM says the fires were lit in the single men's complex -- which includedtwo bedrooms and two toilet areas -- about 1.30am (CDT).
He says the fires were put out quickly by ACM staff before fire crews got there.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Fire Service has confirmed the fires were deliberatelylit, using cardboard and newspaper for fuel.
The Immigration Department has referred the incident to Australian Federal Police forinvestigation.
