Fed: Courts likely to uphold Amrozi death verdict: experts
Legal experts say Indonesian courts will most likely uphold the death penalty on Balibomber AMROZI and risk further terrorist attacks in the process.
Analysts say the Jakarta government will act out of self-interest to push for the deathpenalty because it sees Islamic terrorism as a major threat.
TIM LINDSEY, director of Melbourne University's Asian Law Centre, says the appeal processwill be controversial and involve a dubious interpretation of the Universal Declarationof Human Rights as adopted by the Indonesian constitution.
But he says he thinks the death penalty will be upheld, mostly for political reasons.
He says the Indonesian government is very worried about Islamic fundamentalism andterrorism on its own soil.
And CLIVE WILLIAMS, director of terrorism studies at the Australian National University, says the death sentence will almost certainly make AMROZI a martyr and encourage moreterrorism.
The appeal process is expected to take at least six months before a high court, thenthe Supreme Court and finally a new Constitutional Court, which has not even been formedyet.
